Chapter Ten

“We have to talk to the Trews again,” said Nancy to me, under her breath so that the other nearby guests couldn’t hear her.

“I agree.”

I looked around for Mrs. Watson in the milling crowds although she was not immediately apparent but thankfully the Trews were spotted walking over to join the line up snaking toward the front desk.

Pointing in their direction, I waved Nancy’s attention away from the fallen pottery and its crater.

“May we talk to you?” asked Nancy, when we got within earshot of the couple.

“What for?” asked Mrs. Trew, hugging her arms tightly around herself, irritation mixed with fear written all over her face.

“Just a few questions. It won’t take a minute.”

Mr. Trew sighed and nodded slightly.

“Good. Let’s just go into the dining room shall we?”

“What? You mean we have to get out of line? We want to get the hell out of here,” said Mrs. Trew angrily, looking to her husband to stand up to us.

“It will only take a few minutes,” said Nancy, motioning toward the dining room doors.

“Well all right…” said Mr. Trew, sighing heavily but still doing as he was told.

Mrs. Trew stood still for a few moments, glaring angrily after her husband, furious that he would cave so easily. Stomping after him, she resentfully flopped down into the waiting chair next to her husband.

“Were you two in business with Mr.Simons?” asked Nancy.

“Yes,” said Mr. Trew shortly.

“Why did you neglect to mention this to us before?”

“What do you care?” asked Mrs. Trew, interrupting her husband before he could say anything.

“It is clearly very important information for solving this case. Did you make money in your business dealings with him?”

Mr. and Mrs. Trew looked at each other, the wife silently daring her husband to answer that one.

“Did you lose a lot of money?”

Mr.Trew started to turn a distinct shade of red while Mrs. Trew snarled, “That is none of your business.”

“Did Mr. Simons lose money?”

A loud snort of derision erupted from Mrs. Trew before she said, “No! That bastard didn’t lose any money. He made money. We’re the only ones who lost money.”

“So you had lots of motive for killing him then.”

Mrs. Trew’s mouth snapped shut as she looked as if someone had slapped her across the face.

“You have no proof,” said Mr. Trew quietly.

“Where were you between 10 P.M. and 2 A.M.?”

“In bed. We go to bed early.”

“Can anyone verify that?”

“Well we’re each other’s alibi obviously,” said Mrs.Trew defiantly.

“So you were in on it together,” said Nancy, folding her arms and glaring at Mrs.Trew.

“That’s it. We’re going. This interview is over,” said Mr.Trew, standing up abruptly and ushering a surprised missus out of her seat and toward the door.

“You’re not allowed to leave the resort,” snapped Nancy.

The Trews turned back as one, Mr. Trew’s arms protectively wrapped around his wife’s shoulders, both glaring murderously at Nancy before leaving the room, slamming the door behind them.

“It’s got to be them,” said Nancy emphatically, pointing at the still quivering door the Trews left behind.

“I could see one of them doing it but not both of them.
